Chilly Party Girls

“Y’all don’t pack like a…”

“A jacket? Sweater? And where would you put that?” Cindy interrupted, sparking a chorus of giggles from the girls. “I might as well be wearing nothing,” I responded meekly. “We would if we could, babe,” Katrina quipped from the middle of the huddled group, prompting another round of giggles. I turned away from the group in feigned annoyance, tapping my heeled foot impatiently as we waited for our Uber. The girls chatted among themselves, and I took the opportunity to hop on my phone, blowing a strand of hair off my face as I scrolled with my long, polished nails—an ordeal in itself, add that to the growing list of annoyances. My eyes scanned through the myriad of scantily clad women on my Instagram, less fun now that I could fit in. I was interrupted by one of the girls: “Uber’s here! Get in here, cuties!”

We squeezed into the large SUV, the combined fabric of our outfits barely amounting to one proper dress. The driver remained silent, likely accustomed to party girls. I sat tight in my middle seat, a babe to my left and a babe to my right. I wasn’t myself yet I still wanted them to think I was cool. I fidgeted with my phone until the redhead stunner beside me detached from the main conversation. “Your sister really wanted to bring you along, huh? Do you know why she was invited?” I paused, not having considered it before, only caring that Lil Uzi would be at the party. “You know what, don’t worry about it. I’ll look after you. I can’t believe she let this be your first experience as a girl,” she continued.

As the car veered off the highway, we soon screeched to a halt. One window showcased the Los Angeles skyline, while the other framed a huge mansion. I wobbled out of the car, hand on the shoulder of the next girl. The breeze was slightly cooler than earlier. My sister approached me for the first time that evening as we moved towards the loud music. I braced for some sisterly advice, I could sure use some. “Don’t mess this up for me, or I swear to God…” She walked away before I could reply.
