“Is that what you think, Emily?” the brunette across from Quentin asked. “If that’s how you feel, I’m fully behind you.” Lindsey grabbed his hand on the table, her fingers feeling delightful to him. He had just finished explaining how ‘Quentin’, the quiet kid from their math class, was actually super cool and attractive. What he hadn’t expected was for his crush to think her friend Emily wanted Quentin. His plan was backfiring.
“No, but like, if you want to get with Quentin, that’s totally cool, I get it,” he blurted out, “And I think he likes you.” He regretted saying that last part instantly. Lindsey looked at him with a confused expression. Regardless of her expression, she looked perfect in Quentin’s eyes. He quickly averted his gaze despite now looking like an exact copy of her adorable friend Emily, feeling nervous. Fortunately, a waiter interrupted his nervous spiel, “Can I start you ladies off with some drinks?” Quentin decided to order whatever Lindsey ordered, considering it the safe option.
A few moments later, their drinks arrived. He let Lindsey talk about her day, not that it required much permitting; she seemed intent on ensuring ‘Emily’ knew every minor detail of her day and her feelings about those details. Quentin was loving it, trying to conceal his broad smile behind sips of his drink, laughing along to inside jokes he didn’t understand, and basking in being the sole focus of Lindsey’s attention. It felt like heaven to him, and he almost forgot he was in Emily’s body until two boys he recognized from school approached their table.
“Hey, ladies! We’ve been over there for like an hour. I was like, how long until Lindsey and Emily notice us?” one of them said, clearly too excited. Lindsey rolled her eyes in a playfully annoyed manner, “We heard you the moment you walked in, Trav. Maybe you two should try using your indoor voices,” she cooed to the sweaty boys. “Oh yeah, my bad, we’re still in practice mode. Coach had us running all the way to the hills and back⦔
After a whirlwind of conversation, they all got up to leave together, much to Quentin’s dismay. To make matters worse, the group split into pairs as they walked down the sidewalk. He watched his crush walk ahead with another boy, Lindsey laughing at every little thing he said. Quentin barely paid any attention to the boy who was head over heels for Emily walking beside him. If only he knew this ‘Emily’ only had eyes for the girl walking just ahead.
